Tech Lead, Engineering

About the Role

Deel is looking for a Tech Lead with deep full-stack and database expertise who understands how systems behave under load. You won’t just be measured by your Node.js proficiency; you will be measured by the problems you choose to solve, your architectural decisions, and your ability to lead through influence.

This is a high-impact role at a company with a $17.3 billion valuation and $1B in ARR. You will be responsible for identifying high-impact technical problems and designing scalable systems that support Deel’s global payroll infrastructure, which currently processes over $11 billion annually.

What You’ll Do

• Technical Strategy: Identify and prioritize high-impact technical and product problems based on business impact.

• System Design: Design and guide scalable backend and data systems, ensuring they remain reliable under real-world conditions.

• Architectural Ownership: Own decisions across data, services, and system boundaries, avoiding over-engineering in favor of pragmatic trade-offs.

• Execution through Others: Lead execution through the team rather than just individual contribution; delegate effectively to scale impact.

• Product Partnership: Partner with Product teams to ensure technical work directly drives business outcomes.

• Communication: Explain complex technical trade-offs clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.

What You’ll Bring

• Deep Database Expertise (Critical): Strong knowledge of relational databases (SQL), query optimization, indexing strategies, transactions, isolation levels, and concurrency control. This is the most important technical requirement for the role.

• Distributed Systems: Strong understanding of queues, message brokers, async processing, microservices, load balancing, and the request lifecycle.

• Backend Foundations: Strong fundamentals in APIs, system architecture, OOP, and clean design principles.

• Tech Stack: Proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript. While these are the primary tools, the focus is on systems thinking rather than specific frameworks.

• Frontend Awareness: Working knowledge of React, specifically regarding performance implications and integration points.

• Pragmatic Leadership: An "80/20" mindset focused on business impact and the ability to lead through clarity and trust rather than authority.
