Staff Backend Engineer, Analytics Instrumentation (Golang)
Verified EmployerGitLab
Job Description
As a Staff Backend Engineer, you'll set the technical direction for our instrumentation platform, guide architecture for a foundational service, and mentor engineers across the company. You'll establish patterns that help teams build reliable, scalable instrumentation that improves billing accuracy, product insights, and long-term growth.
Our team is building a unified, Go-based instrumentation service that replaces multiple language-specific SDKs. This foundational service is used by all R&D teams at GitLab to manage the transport and validation of data across SaaS and Self-Managed environments.
What You’ll Do
Architectural Leadership: Architect and guide the design of a unified Go-based instrumentation service, replacing language-specific SDKs with a high-performance, company-wide standard.
Data Strategy: Own the strategy for handling and improving instrumentation data quality to increase billing accuracy and strengthen product planning.
Mentorship & Training: Coordinate initiatives with product development teams to improve adoption of instrumentation best practices and consistency across features.
Reliability Standards: Set reliability and turnaround standards for usage billing systems, contribute to critical-incident on-call coverage, and lead post-incident improvements.
Cross-Functional Coordination: Align requirements across research, development, and enterprise data organizations to deliver solutions that serve multiple stakeholders.
Pattern Establishment: Own architectural choices that balance ease of use for developers with the strict correctness required by data consumers.
What You’ll Bring
Extensive Go Experience: Proven track record of architecting and shipping large-scale production services in Go.
System Design Expertise: Demonstrated ability to design backend systems that scale and influence the architectural choices of multiple teams.
Infrastructure Mastery: Deep expertise in system reliability, performance optimization, data quality, and observability.
API Design: Proficiency in designing and evolving REST, gRPC, or similar APIs for internal consumption at scale.
Stakeholder Management: Experience influencing product teams and data consumers through technical vision and mentorship.
Foundational Impact: Deep expertise in instrumentation or analytics systems that have become critical to company operations.
